Alabama College GPA Requirements (2026)

GPA requirements vary significantly across Alabama's public universities. These are averages for admitted students — not hard cutoffs. Schools use holistic review, so a strong essay, recommendations, or test scores can offset a lower GPA.

Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

Alabama college admissions offices typically compare applicants on an unweighted 4.0 scale for consistency across high schools. However, they also note your course rigor — a 3.7 with five AP courses is viewed more favorably than a 3.7 with all standard courses.

Weighted GPA adds bonus points for difficult courses:

  • AP / IB courses: +1.0 point (so an A = 5.0 on weighted scale)
  • Honors courses: +0.5 point (so an A = 4.5 on weighted scale)

Our Semester GPA calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. For weighted GPA, select "AP/IB" or "Honors" in the grade dropdown — the calculator adds the appropriate bonus automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

The average unweighted GPA for admitted UA students is around 3.71. A 3.5 is considered the practical baseline for regular admission. UA is test-optional through Fall 2026, so GPA carries significant weight.
Multiply each course's grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.) by its credit hours to get quality points. Divide total quality points by total credit hours. Example: A in 3-credit course (12 pts) + B in 4-credit course (12 pts) = 24 pts ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.
Unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted GPA adds bonuses for harder courses: +1.0 for AP/IB, +0.5 for Honors. Alabama colleges use unweighted GPA for comparison but also evaluate course rigor.
Auburn's average admitted student GPA is about 3.8 unweighted. Auburn uses holistic review, so a lower GPA can sometimes be offset by strong test scores, essays, or extracurriculars. Competitive programs like engineering and business may require higher GPAs.
The University of Alabama is test-optional through Fall 2026. You are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores for admission, though submitting strong scores can still help with merit scholarship eligibility.
Use the Target Grade Calculator (tab 3) to find the exact semester GPA you need. In practice: retake courses where your school allows grade forgiveness, load up on credit hours in semesters where you expect strong performance, and prioritize courses in your strongest subjects.
3.0 (B average) is standard for good academic standing at Alabama colleges. A 3.5+ qualifies for dean's list at most schools and is expected for competitive graduate school applications. Most employers look for a 3.0 minimum.
UA's Presidential Scholarship requires a 3.5+ GPA and strong test scores. The Capstone Scholarship starts at 3.0. Auburn and UAB have their own merit aid thresholds. Check each school's financial aid page — thresholds are updated annually.
